REALIGNMENT OF THE WALNUT STREET, EAST FARM STREET,
NORTH WALNUT STREET INTERSECTION (LONG VERSION)

The
City of Waterbury has received a grant in support of traffic safety
improvements at the intersection of East Farm Street and
Walnut Street. The grant will be provided by the State of Connecticut
through its Local Road Accident Reduction Program (LRARP). All improvements
will be in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) guidelines.
The primary goal of the LRARP is the prevention of accidents involving
fatalities or serious injuries to road users at high accident locations.
The
intersection of East Farm Street and Walnut Street has been deemed high risk
due to the elevated volume of accidents at this location. In an effort to
reduce the risk of these types of accidents the City has decided to incorporate
a number of changes at this location. The first change will be to convert the
intersection of East Farm St and Walnut St from a side street stop-controlled
intersection to an all-way stop controlled intersection. The second change will
be adding sidewalk ramps, pedestrian island, bump outs and crosswalk pavement
markings, to help promote pedestrian safety in the area.
The
anticipated construction cost will be approximately $850,000. The LRARP Grant
will provide $717,300 of the construction cost and the City of Waterbury will
fund the balance of the costs. Preliminary design has been completed and the
project is slated for construction during summer of 2024. This program will be
administered by the City of Waterbury.
It
is the City’s policy to keep residents informed and involved when such projects
are undertaken. The intersection improvements will be constructed entirely
within the City’s Right of Way. It is important that the community share its
concerns and provide input to assure the project is a success. For this reason,
the City will be conducting a presentation outlining the details of the
proposed improvements and soliciting questions, comments and suggestions from
the public.
The Public Information
Meeting will be held in person at 235 Grand Street City Hall in the Cass
Gilbert Room on April 24, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. and via zoom, in an effort
to make the meeting more accessible to the public. The meeting site is ADA
accessible. The project information will also be available at the Department
of Engineering office and on line at the City’s website.
